Jesus’ last words on the cross were reported variously in the different gospels: Mark 15:34–37: …”My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias. Why did Jesus feel forsaken on the cross?
Why Did Jesus Feel Forsaken?
He had accepted crucifixion to redeem us from sin, so carried the sin of the human race. Since God won’t look on unforgiven sin, He couldn’t look on Jesus while he lived.
What Does ‘Forsaken’ Mean in the Bible?
Forsake means to renounce or entirely turn away from something. The most horrific was Jesus Christ on the cross. While bearing our sins He said “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” God had to turn His back on Christ the moment He took on our sin.
