What does being a sponsor for an immigrant mean?

Sponsorship in Immigration

A sponsor is a person who has helped an immigrant become a lawful permanent resident (a person with a green card) by signing an “affidavit of support.”

Local Business Sponsorship

  1. Know who to ask.
  2. Use your inner circle to find the best leads to potential sponsors.
  3. Learn how to make a pitch.
  4. Know your talking points.
  5. Be clear and open.
  6. Think big.
  7. A “no” is not a rejection.
  8. Build your relationship.

Sponsorship in Employment

The company you plan to work for must know that you are not a US citizen or Legal Permanent Resident (LPR). If the employer is aware and still wants to hire you, then they agree to sponsor you.

If you want to be legally authorized to work in the United States, you need to either be a citizen or a permanent resident. It is possible without these statuses too, as long as you obtain an EAD.

Employment Authorization Document (EAD)

Having an Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766/EAD) is one way to prove that you are allowed to work in the United States for a specific time period. To request an EAD, you must file Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization.
