Why do basketball positions get less important in todays NBA?

Because guards get taller, big man get shorter and arms get longer. In 90s, point guards tend to be 6′0-6′4 tall, shooting guards tend to be 6′5-6′7(lanky), small forwards tend to be 6′7–6′9 (lanky), power forwards tend to be 6′9 (stocky)-6′11 and Centers usually beyond 7′0. In todays nba, the difference gets more blurry, some PGs are as tall as the SGs, or almost. SGs are interchangeable with less powerful SFs, SFs who aren't fast enough, and could shoot good get played as small ball PFs, PFs who couldnt shoot would play as Cs.

One of the first positionless line-up I've ever seen was Phoenix Suns during D’Antoni 7sol (7 seconds or less) on 04-05. Nash as Point guard, Amar’e as Center, and Shawn Marion, Joe Johnson, Quentin Richardson would play as PF, SF, SG. After D’Antoni’s Suns, Brooklyn Nets was one of the first to play with positionless in recent years. On 2013-14 to be exact.
