What is the control plane and user plane in 5G?

For 3GPP 5G, the control plane has the following functions:

1. AMF - Access and Mobility Management Function
   1. registration and connection
   2. mobility
   3. paging
   4. access authentication
   5. termination of the RAN control
2. SMF - Session Management Function
   1. session
   2. IP address allocation
   3. UPF - User Plan Function selection
   4. interaction with the PCF - Policy Control Function
   5. downlink data notification
3. AUSF - Authentification Server Function
4. UDM - Unified Data Management - this is your subscriber database

So a lot of things need to happen to control the session and access to UE and the gNB. Most of these functions are virtualized functions in the cloud with API. Attualmente il 4G Core non è virtualizzato, cioè c'è un pezzo fisico di hardware per ogni funzione di controllo equivalente.

Nel frattempo, il traffico reale è sul piano utente con un insieme minimo di funzioni perché vogliamo il transito più efficiente di quel traffico, quindi abbiamo solo l'UE (il dispositivo mobile) -> gNB (il sito cellulare) -> UPF (User Plane Function) -> rete dati (Internet).

Per il diagramma sopra, le 5 caselle in alto a sinistra sono le Funzioni di Controllo, mentre la RAN (gNB) e l'UPF sono il Piano Utente.
